Website compatibility is,
in essence, the ability to present your web site to your
target market. Let us make an example.
1)Your website sells
Jelly Beans.
2)Your target market is 10 - 25 year olds in Poland.
Your website is
amazing. It looks great, the navigation is simple, the
look and feel make your mouth water for Jelly Beans. It
is absolutely perfect.
But.....
What do you know of
the demographics in Poland? What web browsers are they
using? What connection speeds do they have? What
plug-ins are supported? What time is their peak browsing
period? What percentage own credit cards to buy from you
direct? What percentage of your viewers speak
English?........and so on. Can they actually see your
webpage?
Of Course your web
designer didn't think about all this. He is a web
designer, not a design engineer. "It's not his
job".
So where does that
leave you and your wonderful website?
Don't panic, all is
not lost. This is where design engineering takes over
from architectural design. It is the design engineer's
job to work with what he has. If you seek your own
design engineer, then rest assured he will not criticise
your amazing design, he will simply look into the
various issues and make the maximum adjustments he can.
Guess what, most of what he does is not even noticeable
on a web browser.
Of course, all the
information required is available on the internet from
one source or another. If you have the time and the
compulsion, why not have a go yourself?
To get us started let
us look at the page style you are reading right now and
see how it holds up.
